In English this half term, we will be revising grammar features, before exploring ‘We are Here by Oliver Jeffers’. Following this, linked to our Geography topic, we will be writing our own version of ‘The Great Kapok Tree’ and writing a persuasive letter to prevent the deforestation of the Amazon Rainforest. In poetry, we will studying Japanese Senryu poems and have a go at composing one of our own!

As our class novel, we will be reading, ‘The Boy at the back of the class’.

In Maths, we will begin by exploring place value, exploring numbers up to 1000000, rounding to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, 10000, 100000, as well as comparing these numbers. We will also cover Roman numerals to 10000. Following on from this we will look at negative numbers and number sequences, before moving on to adding and subtracting numbers with more than 4 digits, using a formal written method and learning mental strategies to add and subtract increasingly large numbers. We will then further consolidate this learning, solving multi-step problems, selecting the correct operations required. To complete this half term, we will learn about how to interpret graphs and tables, including reading information from line graphs and making comparisons from the data. We will also draw line graphs to represent given data.

As always we will continue to practise times tables regularly to ensure rapid recall of all multiplication facts up to 12 x 12.

In our RE topic this term, we will be reflecting on what makes us unique and learning about the martyr Maximilian Kolbe. This will help us to understand the importance of peacemakers in our lives today and how we live as children of God. It should certainly help us to appreciate our parents and all the people in our lives who sacrifice so much for us every day.

Space WalkIn our Science lessons, we are going to be studying Earth and Space, describing the planets as approximately spherical bodies, exploring the movement of the Earth, Moon and other planets, relative to the sun, as well as explaining how night and day occurs.

In our Geography this half term, we will be exploring South America, developing our map reading skills and looking at the physical and human features of the land use. We are also going to be looking at the Amazon Rainforest in more depth, exploring climate, biomes and layers of the Rainforest. This will lead us into studying the Mayans in our History topic next half term.

During our Art lessons, we will be learning about the artist Henri Rousseau and his work and exploring the tonal variations in his painting. Children will use sketchbooks to record their ideas and practise newly learned skills before applying taught techniques to produce a class collage using paints and oil pastels.

In PE, we will be going swimming once a week (on a Friday morning) and then completing the daily mile each afternoon to keep regularly active. 

During French lessons this half term, children will begin by consolidating their learning from Year 4 revising key vocabulary for numbers up to 31, colours, days of the week and months of the year. Moving into the Year 5 French curriculum, we will be learning how to say numbers up to 200, exploring patterns to help us remember how to say each of these and the currency of France and how to use this, being able to recognise amounts in French and use euros accurately. 

In Music, we will be exploring Samba music, looking at typical rhythms used playing different rhythm games to explore rhythms in relation to pulse. We will also be listening to different music, typical to South America and picking out key themes from the music and learning to sing a carnival song. Finally, we will be combining the song learnt and the rhythms to compose our own groups pieces in Samba style.

In Computing lessons, we will be learning how to programme a game using Scratch. Looking in depth at coding.
