Welcome to Year 6!
Advent term may be a little different to previous years, but we’re planning on having lots of fun and exciting learning, nonetheless. Our PSHE will help us settle back into school as we learn all about looking after our well-being and what we can do to take care of our mental health, especially in times of uncertainty such as these.
In topic, we are learning about South America. We are going to be taking a journey down the Amazon River, absorbing all the sights and sounds. We’ll also be learning about how the land use in the Amazon Rainforest has changed, why, and what impact this has. We’ll then be travelling south to the other countries, comparing climate, land use and exports. Perhaps we’ll even come face to face with an indigenous tribe!
Our English will continue with the South American theme where we will be writing a persuasive letter to try and prevent further deforestation of the Amazon Rainforest. We will be focussing on persuasive features such as rhetorical questions, the use of emotive language and stating facts and statistics to evidence our arguments.
Not many people have heard of Carolus Linnaeus, but his work in the field of science transformed the way that living things were identified and classified. We’re going to be delving further into this and looking at the importance of classification before crating our own classification keys. Our experiment will involve the classification domain of bacteria, where will be investigating different conditions for growing bacteria.
In maths, we will be looking at place value and numbers up to 1,000,000, as well as different methods of addition and subtracting. We will be also be focussing on mental maths and looking at different strategies to add and subtract mentally, even when some of the numbers can be quite large.
In PE we are going to be trying something new – orienteering! This is where we are going to be using directions and instructions to navigate between control points marked on an orienteering map in as quick as time as possible! Unfortunately, we can’t rely on the use of a sat nav and are going to have to rely on a good, old fashioned map. Our PE day is Monday so please remember to send your child in their PE kit on this day.
Love is the focus in RE, and recognising that God loves us unconditionally. We will be reading lots of scripture connected to this, and in particular, focussing on parable of the Prodigal Son to show the importance of unconditional love and forgiveness. We will also be writing our own prayers about God’s love and forgiveness before thinking about how we follow in Jesus’ footsteps and be willing to forgive more easily.
We look forward to a successful year and value your support moving forward.
