Welcome to 6L

English

In English throughout the term, we will continue to develop reading comprehension skills, analysing texts and exploring vocabulary in context, as well as sequencing and summarising. Children will have many opportunities to practise answering retrieval and inference SATs style questions, drawing on information found in the text.

Our texts will be: Shackleton’s Journey and Hansel and Gretel. We will use these texts to develop our own independent writing and to explore the following features: Past tense used accurately, writing in the third person, dialogue between two characters, descriptions of settings and animals, effective adverbs, adverbs, adverbial phrases to show the passing of time, expanded noun phrases, figurative language, semi-colons to link independent clauses and parenthesis.

Alongside this, children will continue to focus on their statutory spelling lists, developing an understanding of the meaning of each of these words to be able to use them proficiently within their writing. There will also be many opportunities to revise and practise grammar skills previously learnt.

Maths

In Maths, we will continue to regularly revisit and revise skills already taught this year such as: place value; rounding to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, 10000 and 100000; number sequences; calculating using all four number operations, using a formal written method and learning mental strategies, using known facts; factors and common factors, multiples and common multiples, prime numbers, squared and cubed numbers and order of operations and use of brackets.

We will also consolidate our learning around fractions, regularly revisiting and practising skills covered last term around simplifying, converting, ordering and comparing, as well as calculating with fractions using all four number operations. This will allow us to solve problems involving fractions calculations effectively too.

Following this, we will learn about algebra and converting different measures, before exploring area and perimeter further.

We will also learn about ratio and proportion before covering properties of shapes and exploring angles.

 

RE

Our first topic is ' Death and New Life'. Children will show how their own and others’ decisions concerning the effects of death and loss are informed by beliefs and values. They will describe and show understanding of religious sources, beliefs, ideas, feelings and experiences connected with Lent, Good Friday of the Passion of the Lord; and The Easter Vigil in the Holy Night; making links between them.

Our Second topic is ‘Witness’. We come to understand how Christians believe that the spirit of God is active in each person and in a special way in the community of believers which is the Church. We will gain further knowledge and understanding of how The Feast of Pentecost is the celebration both of the gift of God’s Holy Spirit and the trust God places in people to be witnesses in the world. The children will describe and show understanding of religious sources, beliefs, ideas, feeling and personal experiences linking these to prayers and scripture.

We will also study Hinduism where we will learn about about preparations for janmashtami which explains about karma. The children will read the story of Rama which will illustrate an aspect of dharma and give reasons why it illustrates dharma. They will research the life of Gandhi and look at the reasons for his behaviour.

Follow this we will develop an understanding of The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, giving reasons for the actions and symbols used, making links to scripture, what Catholics believe and how they should act.

Science

In our Light topic, we will learn about how light travels and the colours light is made up of, before exploring reflections and how light helps us to see objects and why we see objects in particular colours. We will end this topic considering what happens to the appearance of objects when placed in water.

Art

In Art this term the unit is called,’ Make my voice heard: exploring art with a message’. The children look at the famous ‘Guernica’ by Picasso and the confronting works of Käthe Kollwitz and through the mediums of graffiti, drawing, painting and sculpture, pupils create their own artworks that speak to the viewer.

PE

This term, PE will continue to be on a Thursday and children should come to school in their PE kits. The children supported by ‘780 Coaching’, will continue learning about team games and begin learning orienteering skills, following instructions and working as a team to solve problems.

Computing

In Computing this term, we will be completing a topic based on Bletchley Park. In this topic, we will discover the history of Bletchley Park and learn about code breaking and password hacking. This will provide opportunity to demonstrate some of their digital literacy skills by creating presentations about historical figures too.

PSHE

This term children will be learning about how to be their best and growing and changing. As part of this, children will explore personal wellbeing, recognising risk and basic first aid. In ‘Growing and Changing’ they will learn about ways of managing change which will be paired with our RSE curriculum. (Further details of this will be given nearer the time.)

French

In French we will be learning about French sports and The Olympics. They will conjugate the verb ‘aller’ -to go, and learn sports vocabulary. They will expand their knowledge of country names and develop their cultural knowledge of Pétanque. Children will develop their speaking and listening skill in our second topic about French football champions as well as learning some written French to create a football player profile.

Homework

In Year 6, children are expected to complete a minimum of 2000 points on Mathletics each week, a minimum of 5 Reading Plus lessons a week (1 hour of time will be given in school as well to do this but extra must be completed at home too), as well as daily reads at home and use TTRS regularly to develop rapid recall of all times table facts.

Mathletics – checked every Monday

Reading – checked every Monday (including using Reading Plus at home)

Spellings – 15 spelling will be sent home each week for the children to learn. These will be sent home on a Friday and tested the following Friday. Alongside these, children should continue to ensure they are learning all spellings from the Y3/4 & Y5/6 statutory spellings lists.

Homework – Maths & English tasks will be sent home on a Friday and will be expected to be returned by Monday. These tasks will support learning and allow for revision, where required.
